- History The history of Madrid starts with the Roman era. At the beginning of the VII century the Moors conquest the city and gave the name Magerit to the city. During the Middle Age it was just a little village with less than 3.000 inhabitants but in the early XV century Madrid became the residence of Spanish monarchs. Since the XIX century Madrid has received more and more political importance and in 1983 it became the capital city of the autonomous region of Madrid. It is the major city of Spain and the third largest urban area of the European Union. As the capital it shelters various political and administrative functions as well as urban institutions and organisations.
- Atracciones In 2006, Madrid was the fourth most visited town of Europe. Every year about 7 million tourists go to Madrid. Furthermore, it is the domicile of the World Tourism Organisation and the International Faire Of Tourism - FITUR. Nearly all touristical attractions are located in the city centre, but mainly in the districts of “Centro, Salamanca, Chamberí, Retiro and Arganzuela”. The neuralgic centre of the city is “Puerta del Sol”, but Madrid offers a great quantity of monuments e. g.: Real Palace, “Puerta del Sol”, “Plaza Mayor”, “Plaza de Cibeles”, Prado Museum, or park “Buen Retiro”.
- Climate The region of Madrid has a Mediterranean climate with cold winters with temperatures that sometimes drop below 0 °C. Summer tends to be hot with temperatures that consistently surpass 30 °C and often reach 40 °C.
